How To Wash Faux Fur

Synthetic fibers, such as acrylic or modacrylic, that are made to look like real fur. Often washable, but heat sensitive. Used for coats, vests, hats, gloves, linings, and trimming.

Step 1: Pretreat

Knowing how to wash and clean faux fur pillows, blankets, rugs, slippers, boots, and coats starts with proper pre treatment!

Apply your preferred stain treatment and work in with a Stain Brush. Focus on susceptible areas such as underarms, necklines, and cuffs when cleaning faux fur.

Avoid scrubbing or vigorously rubbing faux fur when pretreating. If dealing with a sticky situation - like gum - try rubbing a teeny tiny bit of a neutral oil (like coconut) in your fingers before massaging into the fibers to loosen the gunk.

Step 2: Handwash

Handwashing is always the best and safest method for washing faux fur garments.

Step 1: Add 2 capfuls or a squirt of Wool & Cashmere Shampoo to a tub or sink filled with cool water.

Step 2: Submerge the item and gently agitate the water to evenly distribute soap. Soak for up to 30 minutes.

Step 3: Rinse well by running cool water through the item until the water is no longer soapy.

Do not wring. Instead, press the water out of the item.

Step 3: Machine Wash

We only recommend machine laundering faux fur specifically tagged as “washable”.

Step 1: Start by placing the faux fur item in a Mesh Bag.

Step 2: Add the appropriate amount of a gentle wash, like the Wool & Cashmere Shampoo, according to the machine and load size.

Step 3: Select the delicate cycle on the washing machine, and make sure the water temperature is cold and the spin is on low.

Step 4: Dry & Finish

Lay the faux fur item flat in its natural shape on a drying rack or hang to dry. Do not put it in the dryer, ever! The heat will cause the synthetic fibers to warp and melt.

Use a wide-tooth comb or wire brush to gently detangle and brush the faux fur as needed.

To remove wrinkles and refresh, we recommend steaming for the best and safest finish. If you don't have a steamer, you can use the iron by hovering over the item using the steam setting.

Step 5: Store

Always store faux fur items clean. We recommend storing in a breathable, zippered cotton or canvas bag to protect items from bugs.

Storing in plastic encourages yellowing and can trap mildew-causing moisture.

All techniques are based on textile science. Not all garments perform and react as science would predict.
